2019 Play Estate Winery Viognier

Play Estate Winery, located in Penticton, BC, has a new winemaker named Stephanie Bryers. Stephanie debuts at Play Estate with the 2019 vintage, which includes four white wines and two Rosé.

Stephanie graduated from Niagara College’s Winery and Viticulture program. She has worked in Ontario, New Zealand, Portugal and, most recently, as assistant winemaker at Culmina Family Estate Winery in Oliver.

Play Estate Winery is looking to focus more on terroir, making elegant, small lot wines. It sounds as though Stephanie is playing a big part in realizing this vision as her 2019 vintage has been described by Play’s General Manager, Gordon Ritchie, as “the best wines we’ve ever made as a winery.”

2019 Play Estate Winery Viognier $24.00

Harvested on October 7th, 2019, these grapes were allowed 23 hours of skin contact before the juice was pressed-off. Fermentation took place using a combination of wild and carefully selected yeasts. Maturation occurred in stainless steel (69%) and new French Oak (31%). Only 240 cases of this wine were made.

After four hours in the decanter there are aromas of pear, jasmine, dried grass, peach and crushed gravel. This is a full bodied Viognier with medium+ acidity. The palate is round and creamy offering flavours of peach, honeysuckle, ginger and minerality, with a long, herbaceous finish.

The tasting room and bistro at Play Estate Winery are now open. If you are planning a visit, call ahead so as not to be disappointed. If you’re continuing to remain close to home, Play Estate Winery is offering complimentary shipping on six bottles or more within British Columbia.
