Adega Estate Winery 2018 Riesling

Recently I asked people to tell me about their favourite wine and food pairings, and a number of people said Riesling and Thai food. For me, an off-dry Riesling pairs well with Thai food because the residual sugars soften the spice, while the citrus and orchard fruit flavours compliment the cuisine very well. The inherent, high acidity in Riesling cuts through fats in the dishes, cleansing the palate; think delicious, deep fried spring rolls. In addition to these qualities, the 2018 Adega Riesling has some intriguing floral notes, and the wine worked well with our Thai feast this past weekend.

2018 Adega Riesling $22.00

The 2018 Riesling from Adega Estate Winery has a delicate nose of yellow apples, peach, minerality, flowers and hard lemon candies. It is a medium bodied, off-dry wine with high acidity that really kicks-in at the end, refreshing the palate. The palate offers flavours of apple, peach, blooming clover, echinacea and lemon with a medium finish.

Have you heard of Adega Estate Winery? Adega means cellar in Portuguese. It is a family run winery in Osoyoos, owned by Alex Nunes and his brother-in-law Fred Farinha, with their wives, Maria and Pamela. Alex and Fred’s families both immigrated to Osoyoos during the 1950’s and 1960’s as tree fruit growers. Around 2005, Fred and Alex had to decide whether to sell their land in the face of lessening returns on tree fruits, or to convert their orchards to vineyards. They eventually settled on the latter option, planting a total of 38 acres of vine over three vineyard sites.

Adega Estate Winery is open daily for tastings. During these times of flux, I always recommend calling ahead before you visit.
