The Chave family have been growing grapes in northern Rhône since 1481. Currently the family business is headed by Gérard Chave and his son Jean-Louis. Jean-Louis joined his father in 1992 after completing a degree in oenology at the University of California, Davis. Jean-Louis is responsible for replanting his family’s original vineyards, on their Saint-Joseph estate, which were abandoned in the early 1900’s with phylloxera.
The Chave family employs traditional farming practices and believes strongly in minimal intervention winemaking. They are well known for their Hermitage but they also produce a more affordable négociant line, which sources grapes from different growers. ‘Mon Coeur’ is part of their négociant line and it is a blend of Grenache and Syrah from southern Rhône vineyards in Vinsobres, Visan, Buisson and Estézargues. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and aging occurs in an assortment of new and old barrels, demi-muids and large foudres.
